The Bedford Book of Genres defines genre as a compositions kind, category, or sort. The book goes on to say how genre is an organizational tool to help categorized different types of composition. By reading further, the book explains that genres are not fixed; some compositions overlap or change depending on how people use the genre. Both the Bedford Book and Bitzer talk about rhetorical situation, but Bitzer goes into much greater depth while explaining rhetorical situation. The Bedford book explains that rhetorical situation is the context in which you create composition. Bitzer expands on this by saying that the situation creates the discourse. This means that a certain set of conditions will arise prompting a response communicated with purpose, or rhetoric. The last genre I composed in was a presentation I did over summer to a group of children. The presentation included some general rules about upcoming activities and the purpose of those activities, as well as some other general information. The presentation consisted of text, pictures, and a video. This composition was presented Digitally and face-to-face. Similarly to Kerry Dirk’s explaination of the country song lyrics, I used past knowledge of how informative presentations should look and be given. I had to think about my audience as well because being kids I knew that it would be more difficult to keep their attention. In hopes of keeping the audience engaged I tried to limit the words on each slide and put in a lot of fun and interesting pictures.

The purpose of my article was to describe and explain four types of writing: expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative. The audience would be new or learning writers trying to determine the correct type of writing they should use in certain situations. The people who are reading this article are trying to learned the proper time to use these types of writing and are trying to improve their writing. The article is straight forward when explaining the four types of writing so it is using logos as a rhetorical appeal. The article logically walks through the four types of writing giving a description of each, when the type of writing should be used, an example of that type of writing, and a non-example of the type of writing. The article includes pictures and text so the mode for it would be written and visual. I found the article online making the medium digital. The style is more relaxed and straight forward. This makes the article easy and interesting to read while giving the information the audience wants without a lot of fluff and extra unwanted information. The article is organized well breaking up the information into parts that are easily identifiable. This adds to the purposed of the article because by making the useful information easily accessible then more people are likely to understand the information they are trying to provide. This could be adapted to a movie or podcast by having a video of a person with physical example of each type of writing.
